TallyPrime is used by a great many traders and distributors across East Africa. It is fast, familiar and strong on accounting and inventory. Businesses usually look beyond it when they add branches, a sales team in the field, manufacturing, approvals, HR and payroll, or need the owner to see live figures from anywhere.
At a glance
- What it covers
- ERPNext: accounting, stock, sales, purchasing, manufacturing, projects, HR, payroll, CRM and support in one system. TallyPrime: accounting and inventory, with other needs met by add-ons or other software.
- Where it runs
- ERPNext: in the browser, on a phone or computer, from anywhere. TallyPrime: installed on a computer or server, with remote access for people away from it.
- Users
- ERPNext: no licence fee per user, each user with their own rights and approvals. TallyPrime: single-user and multi-user editions, renewed each year for updates.
- Branches
- ERPNext: every branch, warehouse and till in one live system. TallyPrime: often one company file per branch, brought together at head office.
- Local taxes
- We set ERPNext up for eTIMS in Kenya, EFRIS in Uganda, EBM in Rwanda, TRA's fiscal receipts in Tanzania and Smart Invoice in Zambia.
When Tally is enough
A single shop or office whose team knows Tally well and needs accounts and stock, without branches or approvals, can do well on it. Moving only makes sense when the business needs more than the books.
When ERPNext is the better choice
- Each branch has its own Tally data and head office waits for month-end to see the whole business.
- Sales orders, deliveries and approvals happen on paper or WhatsApp before they reach Tally.
- You need HR, payroll, CRM or manufacturing in the same system.
- The owner wants live figures on the phone, not a report emailed from the office.
Moving from Tally to ERPNext
- We look at how you use Tally today: companies, branches, the reports you rely on and the work done outside it in spreadsheets.
- We agree a written scope and a go-live date, and set up ERPNext for your processes, your taxes and your documents.
- We move your data from Tally and you check it in a test copy before anything is final: balances, stock and open documents must match to the cent.
- Your team is trained on its own data, and we run a short parallel period where your closing figures are compared side by side.
- You go live on ERPNext. Tally stays available read-only for as long as you need it for history and audits.
What moves across
- Groups and ledgers as the chart of accounts, with opening balances
- Customers and suppliers, with their outstanding bills bill by bill
- Stock groups, stock items, units and godowns as items and warehouses, with stock balances
- Price levels as price lists
- Cost centres
- Bank ledgers and unreconciled entries
Full transaction history can be moved too, but most businesses choose opening balances and open documents, with Tally kept for the years before. It is faster, cheaper and avoids carrying old mistakes into the new system. Read what to clean before you migrate.
How long it takes and what it costs
A single company with simple stock usually moves in a few weeks; groups with branches, manufacturing or integrations take longer. The cost depends on your users, locations and modules, not on the system you leave. Get a price estimate in two minutes, or book a demo to see your own processes in ERPNext.
